5 “magic eraser” foods to eat after you treat & cheat

When I go to events and introduce myself as a Certified Health Coach, it always happens…people step away from the cupcake table, or smile and say, “please don’t judge me!” as they reach for a bagel.   I get it.  They see me as a representative of healthy choices and what they “should” be doing.  And I’m sure there are nutritionists, dietitians, and trainers who eat perfect all the time.  They say no to junk food and always get their 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables.

I am not one of those people.

My personal eating philosophy is about making healthy choices 90% of the time, and I usually end up closer to about 85% most of the time.  I FEEL better, have more energy, and sleep better when I’m making healthy choices and steering clear of processed foods and alcohol.  But, there are times when I want to enjoy a glass of wine, or eat a slice of pizza (or 2), or have that piece of birthday cake!  And that’s ok… that is living my life!

And yes, there are even times when I really go off track, and I’m fine with that too because I know a few tricks to get back in shape really, really fast. I do it with five “magic eraser” foods!

The next time you over-indulge, or find yourself making one too many unhealthy choices, put these foods into action for a few days to nourish yourself from the inside out.

Bone Broth

Bone broth is top of the list for a quick way to help heal your gut from processed foods, reduce inflammation and improve digestion.  That’s because bone broths are nutrient-dense, easy to digest, rich in flavor and they boost healing.

A bone broth “mini-fast” is, hands down, the fastest way to erase the effects of over-indulging. Fasting allows your body to burn off the extra calories you took in, and bone broth gives you a big shot of fat-burning nutrients.

So if you loaded up on pizza or drank way too many glasses of wine last weekend, do a 24-hour mini-fast.

It’s easy: For 24 hours, sip on bone broth instead of having your usual meals and snacks and be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.  In addition to melting away your extra pounds and healing your gut, you’ll be mainlining a big dose of collagen building blocks to your skin—and your face probably needs some serious damage control after a night of partying!

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is truly one of the healthiest foods on the planet.  It’s super food power comes from its healthy fats called medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs).  MCFAs burn fat and calories, decrease appetite, and in studies it was especially helpful in losing belly fat.   Add 1-2 teaspoons of cold pressed unrefined coconut oil to your coffee (hello Bulletproof coffee!), add it to your green smoothie, or use it to saute some vegetables for dinner.

Green Leafy Vegetables

Chances are, you’re not getting enough green leafy vegetables in your diet!  If you’re hitting the reset button after poor eating for a weekend, reach for leafy greens like spinach, kale and cabbage.  These foods contain thylakoids that lower your blood sugar—and that translates into faster weight loss. In addition, thylakoids are powerful natural appetite suppressants.

Greens also contain nitrites, which have been associated in browning fat cells, meaning converting fat-storing white cells into fat-burning brown cells. This creates extra fat burning and ultimately, weight loss. Greens also contain lots of fiber, which fills you up.

Egg yolks are loaded with choline, a potent lipotropic nutrient that helps carry fat away from your liver so your body can break it down and metabolize it.  Eggs are also a great source of lutein.  Although lutein is famous primarily for its role in eye and skin health, a recent study has determined that lutein may also positively impact a person’s energy levels and help to burn fat.

Berries are nature’s natural detoxifiers.  Berries are full of antioxidants, the fighters of free radicals. The nutrients in berries help your body turn white (bad) fat into beige (good) fat. White fat makes you fat, while beige fat helps you burn fat.  So add fresh berries to your oatmeal, or make a berry smoothie to start your day!

So, there you have it!  5 foods to turn to, to “erase” a wild weekend of unhealthy meal choices.  Start with a 24 hour “mini-fast,” and then keep your eating clean for the next few days.  And you’ll quickly erase the extra pounds and be on your way to feeling great again.

It’ll be like your little “cheat” never happened… and that’s what I call magic!

To your health,
