Hi! I’m Kate Preissler.  I teach about food as medicine, share how to lose weight and re-discover your zest for life, and believe that every single person was made to thrive! And I know firsthand how overwhelming it feels to try to make lifestyle changes to improve your health.

Transforming yourself into a fit, happy, healthy person doesn’t have to be HARD! In fact, I’ve dedicated my work at Thrive Wellness to making sure that isn’t the case.  I know being healthy goes beyond just physical change, and overcoming ambivalence, lack of motivation, and self-doubt is usually the toughest first step.

Most of my life I was fit, happy, and healthy…until I wasn’t.

Throughout my youth, and up until my late 20’s, I never had to think about staying healthy or “managing” my weight.  From a young age, I was involved in competitive sports, and even after I stopped competing, I stayed active.  I worked out regularly, I ate whatever I wanted, and I was healthy and fit.

At 24, I was living in San Diego, CA and I accepted a job in event planning.  During the first several years, I loved everything about it!  The fast pace, the changing schedule, the parties with free food and booze; I thrived!  I worked endlessly and tirelessly for nearly 5 years as an Event Manager.  During that time, I was constantly on the go and on my feet for 8, 10, 12 hours a day.  Although I wasn’t following a workout routine, my job was very physical and I stayed in shape.  I did not realize that lack of sleep, high stress, and convenient food choices were silently beginning to take a toll.

In January 2010, I landed my DREAM JOB (or so I thought at the time) as an Event Sales Manager at a popular restaurant and concert venue.  And while I was ecstatic to have a new job, I quickly learned that in sales you’re only as good as your numbers; and if you do well, you can expect an ambitious increase to your goal!  I was still working long hours, but I was stuck at a desk for a majority of the day.  And I had access to the restaurant for free meals; mac and cheese, chicken tenders, french fries, pizza… it was all just an order away.

Over the next few years, I worked hard climbing the corporate ladder, accepting a promotion to Director of Sales along the way.  And with each year, my sales goals increased and with it so did my stress level.   And when you’re working in a fast-paced, stressful work environment where there is a bar upstairs from your office, it’s pretty easy to start drinking after work to “relax.”  Day by day this cycle continued…. work, stress, eat, drink; repeat.  The struggle was REAL!

Eventually, I learned you can only push your body so far before it pushes back!

In January 2014, I started having panic attacks at work.  I would sit in my office, close the door, and cry.   I had gained nearly 50 pounds in less than 2 years.  When I looked in the mirror, I didn’t recognize myself.  I was exhausted far beyond normal lack-of-sleep tired.  I was surviving the work week only to sleep all weekend, and yet I never felt rested.  Then, I started experiencing vertigo, joint pain, and shortness of breath just from walking up a flight of stairs.

When I went to my doctor, and talked to her about my exhaustion, weight gain, and lack of motivation, she spoke to me about starting on anti-depressants.  I cried.  I didn’t think I was depressed, and I didn’t want to take medication.   But I desperately wanted to feel better and feel like ME again!  I knew I needed to make better food choices, drink less, and exercise, but I didn’t feel motivated to make changes.  I felt powerless to break the cycle of unhealthy habits. 

I truly believe, sometimes when you aren’t following the path you’re meant to be on, the universe gives you a big, giant SHOVE in the direction you are meant to go.

In December 2014, at the height of my health crisis, I was fired from my job for “lack of performance.” It was one of the hardest experiences I’ve had to go through, and ultimately, the best thing that could have happened to me.  Through the experience of being fired, I learned that nothing is worth sacrificing your health for!  In the span of a few years, I’d lost my confidence, disconnected from friends, and stopped pursuing my interests because I was chronically stressed, exhausted, and over-weight.  When I was fired, instead of feeling like I had failed at my job, I felt as if I’d been set free!  I realized I had so much more to offer the world, and I set out on a new path to discover my purpose and find my passion!

After moving back to Connecticut in April 2015, I set my intention on losing weight, increasing my energy, and FINDING MYSELF AGAIN!  I’ve always loved to cook, and so I focused on eating whole foods, portion control, and weekly meal planning.  I began paying attention to how food was making me feel, and started learning about the power of food as medicine.  And the weight started coming off without my ever feeling deprived!  I began with daily walks in my neighborhood, and gradually added more rigorous cardio and strength training.  As I changed my habits with food and exercise, the anxiety and vertigo went away, my body felt less achy, and I had LOTS more energy!  By making small changes, and being consistent, I began to THRIVE!

Out of my struggle to prioritize my health, lose weight, manage stress, and achieve balance in my life, my interest in Health Coaching was born.  While completing my year-long certification program with the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy – the only certification program in collaboration with the Institute of Functional Medicine, the global leader in Functional Medicine – I learned the “secret”…and I knew I had to pay it forward to others!  And this is how Thrive Wellness began.

And the secret is this:
